Abaeco Consultants was founded by Dr. Fernando Ramonet, a multidisciplinary engineer with expertise spanning chemical, mechanical, and industrial engineering. His PhD research, “Circular Bioeconomy Applications in Chemical Engineering,” focused on designing innovative circular systems—from water-scarce regions to bioreactors and safe-by-design frameworks for biorefineries.

ISO 14001 and the Shift Toward Life Cycle Thinking

One of the most significant developments in sustainability management has been the evolution of ISO 14001.

First launched in 1996, ISO 14001 has become the world’s most widely used environmental management standard, with hundreds of thousands of certified organizations globally. However, for many years it was perceived mainly as a compliance and documentation exercise—often disconnected from innovation and real environmental performance.

That changed with the ISO 14001:2015 revision.

The updated standard introduced a life cycle perspective, shifting the focus from a company’s physical boundaries to its entire value chain—from raw material extraction to end-of-life. This evolution aligns ISO 14001 with ecodesign, performance metrics, and continuous improvement, transforming it into a strategic management tool rather than an administrative burden.

Why the ENEC 2017 Guide Still Matters

In 2017, the European Network of Ecodesign Centres (ENEC) released a landmark guide:

“Adopting a Life Cycle Perspective through ISO 14001: A Game Changer – How to Increase Your Company’s Performance Using Ecodesign.”

The guide explains how integrating life cycle thinking into ISO 14001:

• Strengthens leadership and strategic alignment

• Connects environmental management with core business priorities

• Helps organizations assess risks and opportunities across the value chain

It also clarifies how tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)—while not mandatory—can support better decision-making, prevent unintended impact shifts, and improve communication with stakeholders.
